We are entering 2019 with many updates from AR & VR projects, and we’re expecting a lot of upgrades to be released during this exciting year. Decentraland, a decentralized virtual reality platform powered by the Ethereum blockchain is no exception. Within the Decentraland platform, users are able to create, experience, and monetize their content and future applications. This virtual ecosystem can be accessed by a mobile device, a web browser, or a VR headset to enhance the immersive experience.
The website has a fresh new look and is designed with high quality visuals, making it easy for someone to navigate and understand the concept of the project. New users can easily learn how to buy land on the marketplace or how to download the SDK and create their own digital worlds. The project’s vision it to create a social, virtual world where people can create, share, and interact with 3D content. To act as a canvas for both new and established 3D artists, and provide the communities of the world with a playground for crypto-based economies.
As the team stated: “Serving as both a hub for current users and an introduction for newcomers, the new homepage for Decentraland is a better reflection of our project, our goals, and our values as a decentralized platform for hosting immersive content on the web.” The environments and applications created on the platform can range from anything like static 3D scenes to more interactive applications or games.
Creating Digital Worlds
The finite, traversable, 3D virtual space within Decentraland is called LAND, a non-fungible digital asset maintained in an Ethereum smart contract. Decentraland’s SDK is a robust and powerful toolbox enabling developers to really make the most of the platform’s full potential. Developers can check the documentation on how to start creating.
The Marketplace is a dApp allowing people to buy and sell LAND, the individual parcels of virtual real estate. Users don’t need LAND to use the Builder or the SDK, but they do need it to host their content publicly. LAND makes it possible to share and monetize their creations.
- Decentraland is owned by its users. Thanks to blockchain tech, people can own and manage the software that they create. The most important thing is that Decentraland is owned by its community.
- Decentraland is built by its users. Users have control over the content they create. They get to help build the Genesis City.
- Decentraland rewards creativity. The ERC20 token, MANA, is at the foundation of Decentraland’s virtual economy. MANA enables users to earn real money for their creations.
During the last year Decentraland has evolved in both tech and community aspects. The next step is to release the first drag-and-drop scene editor, making it easy for people who aren’t familiar with programming to enrich their digital lands with ready-to-use 3D models. You can also check the Creator Contest which starts next month and will reward users for their creations in celebration of the new Decentraland Builder.
