Introducing a blockchain-based trading card game called Gods Unchained. The game development started in the summer of 2018 and the official release will take place in the first quarter of 2019. By utilizing the Ethereum blockchain it enables users to trade and sell their cards freely, with the same level of ownership as if they were real, tangible cards.
Initially, the game will only be available on laptop & desktop computers running Windows or MacOS. There will also be support for mobile devices, tablets, and VR in the future when the technology becomes available. Players can buy packs to obtain cards, but there will also be a core set that contains hundreds of untradable cards, commonly available to all players.
More than 1 million cards have been sold and more than 100 artists have collaborated to create the graphics art in Gods Unchained. Up to the moment there are 550 cards, with more expected to be designed in the future. The Genesis sale is held entirely in the browser but the game itself is a downloadable application.
Every pack contains five Gods Unchained Genesis cards, each a unique Ethereum ERC721 token and crypto-collectible. Although all the cards are stored on the Ethereum blockchain, the players will only need to interact with the network when they want to purchase new cards or transfer their existing ones.
Each match is a 1v1 battle against another player (or computer). The goal of the game is to reduce your opponent’s life to zero. Players use their collection to build decks of cards, and select a God to play with at the start of each match. Decks contain exactly 30 cards. Each player takes turns to make their moves, first receiving mana (a regenerative resource) and drawing cards, and then using that mana to play those cards. Cards can be creatures, spells, weapons, or special God cards. Players also have access to a God Power, which can be used once per turn, except for Ultimates which can only be used once per game.
In the top left corner of each card is its mana cost. If the card is a creature, it will have yellow and green gems in the lower corners. The number on the yellow gem is its Attack , which shows how much damage it does when it attacks. The number on the green gem is creature’s Health, which show how much damage it can take before it is destroyed, and enters the Void. Most creatures also have text on them which also defines special rules related to that card.
Spells and Weapons
When a spell is played, its effect activates immediately.
The Weapon cards are equipped by your God when the card is played. They allow your god to attack dealing the Attack damage, until the weapon’s durability is zero and it breaks.
Although it’s true that some cards will be more expensive than others, the game is balanced so you don’t need to spend lots of money to have a highly competitive deck. Because cards are tradable, it’s also possible to purchase only what you need from other players to build your dream deck. There is also a weekly rotation of cards to try out and you can always sell your cards in the Marketplace if you don’t need them anymore.
At the start of a game in Gods Unchained, each player has a choice of God Powers. Each God has three regular and one Ultimate Power to choose from. The Ultimate Power is a single use ability with a powerful effect.
The World Tournament will be held once a year, but the 20,000 tickets are already sold out, so, the only way to enter is by purchasing a ticket from another player. The Tournament prizepool is $100,000 plus 10% of all the card pack sales. If you’re looking for more adventure, you can always choose the “Battle Royale” game mode to compete against other players once a day by using your free daily entry.
Funding & Investments
The Gods Unchained team has managed to receive funding and support by blockchain VCs like Coinbase & Nirvana Capital among others, ensuring it’s stability and success. They have also has established partnerships with OpSkins and CryptoKitties, and it will be interesting to see how the economy of card trading on the blockchain will evolve in the future.
During the last months, Gods Unchained has made big progress and has proven it’s here to stay, and that it aims to release a AAA+ game that stands equal to mainstream games like Hearthstone and other popular card games. This will be a critical year for blockchain games like Neon District & VIBE or DIE whose roadmaps are full of releases in 2019.
