Brave – The future of browsing
The open source and privacy-focused Brave browser blocks trackers and ads by default, providing browsing speed up to 2x times faster for desktop and up to 8x times for mobile, when compared to Chrome. It also has its own token integrated, the Basic Attention Token (BAT), providing a solution to the problem of supporting websites and content creators.
Brave is on an important mission of decentralizing online advertising and giving the browsing data monetization back to the control of the users. So far, the Brave Rewards program is available for websites, Youtube & Twitch channels and aims to expand to the support of even more platforms. An ecosystem will be created where both publishers and users will benefit just by browsing the web.
The ICO was held on May 31, 2017 with 156,250 ETH – $36 million raised in just 24 seconds. Recently, it was announced that Brave browser has over 5.5 million monthly users and 28,000 Verified Publishers. The Brave 1.0 release coming in 2019 will enable the Brave Ads, which will start rewarding users for their attention.
Analysis – Features
Advertising – Brave Rewards
Brave is cutting out the middlemen, connecting content creators / website owners and visitors. The Basic Attention Token can be used to obtain a variety of advertising and attention-based services on the BAT platform, as it is exchanged between publishers, advertisers, and users. Brave fights malware and prevents tracking, keeping your information safe and secure. Its servers don’t see or store your data, giving you total control over it. It only contains a ledger system that anonymously captures user attention.
The Brave browser knows where users spend their time, making it the perfect tool to calculate and reward publishers with BATs. This service creates a transparent and efficient Blockchain-based digital advertising market. Users, who opt in, receive fewer but better targeted ads that are less prone to malware and advertisers get better data on their spending.
The users can choose to either enable or disable the auto-contribution option, they can tip a website if they like and they can also choose if they want to make a specific contribution automatically every month, in the style of Patreon.
Some facts about the advertising industry:
- Bots inflicted $7.2 billion in fraud last year.
- Privacy is violated when large media sites host up to 70+ trackers.
- Malware (malvertisements, ransom-ware) went up 132% in one year.
- Google and Facebook take 73% of all ad dollars and 99% of all growth.
- Ads use about 5 seconds of mobile load time on average & they decrease phone battery life by as much as 21%.
I performed a research to look into the current allocation of the BAT tokens. Statistics according to Etherscan:
Top 10 Addresses: 730,564,866 BAT
Top 11-50 Addresses: 357,760,705 BAT
Top 51-100 Addresses: 106,038,523 BAT
Total – Top 100 Addresses: 1,194,364,094 BAT
Binance Cold Wallet: 135,728,039 BAT
User Growth Funds + Development pool: 278,100,910 left of 500,000,000 BAT
Total Supply: 1,500,000,000
Circulating Supply: 1,221,899,089
Beyond top 100: 27,534,995 BAT Tokens
Even though the concept is to build a decentralized ecosystem, there seems to be a centralization in the BAT token’s top 100 holding addresses. This is due to the fact that the ICO was completed too fast and some parties contributed a big amount of money, leaving a small amount of tokens for the rest. Nevertheless, I believe that the technology and the vision of the Brave browser remains true, and that it will disrupt and revolutionize the advertising industry from 2019 and onward.
